Fremont County

Fremont County is the thirteenth most populous of the 64 counties in Colorado, named for explorer and presidential candidate John C. Frémont. The county population was 46,145 at U.S. Census 2000. The county seat and largest city in the county is Cañon City. Fremont county’s dominant industry is corrections and justice and is home to 13 prisons.

  • As of the census of 2000, there were 46,145 people, 15,232 households, and 10,494 families residing in the county.
  • The population density was 30 people per square mile (12/km²). There were 17,145 housing units at an average density of 11 per square mile (4/km²).
  • The racial makeup of the county was 89.52% White, 10.35% of the population were Hispanic or Latino, 5.34% Black or African American, 1.53% Native American, 3.6% from other races.
  • There were:
    15,232 households out of which 30.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.30% were married couples living together,
    9.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and
    31.10% were non-families. 26.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
  • The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.93.
  • In the county the population was spread out with
    20.60% under the age of 18,
    7.50% from 18 to 24,
    33.40% from 25 to 44,
    24.00% from 45 to 64, and
    14.60% who were 65 years of age or older.
  • The median age was 39 years.
  • For every 100 females there were 133.90 males.
  • For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 143.50 males.
  • The median income for a household in the county was $34,150, and the median income for a family was $42,303.
  • Males had a median income of $30,428 versus $23,112 for females.
  • The per capita income for the county was $17,420. A
  • bout 8.30% of families and 11.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.80% of those under age 18 and 7.40% of those age 65 or over.
